For his 10th LP, Cogman reconvened the Dead Messengers at Minnesota’s Pachyderm Studios in January of 2026, right in the middle of Operation Metro Surge, days after government-sanctioned murder of Renee Good and days before that of Alex Pretti. It was fitting that such a session should happen in that time and place, as Cogman had spent the previous year writing the most politically-charged album of his career in response to the sociopolitical upheaval of 2025.

With Storm Cellar / Lightning Rod, he set out to meld the personal and the topical, reflection on the experience of raising his young son in the landscape of 2025 America. Equal parts tender and fiery, intimate and aggressive, Storm Cellar / Lightning Rod shows the growth of Cogman as a songwriter and craftsman over his two decades making solo records.

Featuring his stalwart backing band The Dead Messengers, mixing by J.D. Andrew, and a gorgeous album cover from longtime collaborator Edward Simon, Storm Cellar / Lightning Rod illustrates a songwriter still getting sharper 20 years after first hitting the scene.
